Paul wraps up the first section of his letter by summarizing and reiterating mankind’s total unity in being under the bonds of sin.

In fact, mankind is so totally fallen that he can do nothing to please the Lord. This includes believing in the saving work of Jesus Christ. Fallen man, Paul says, is unable to understand the salvation message and totally unable to do anything good. What can be more “good” than repenting and believing savingly in God’s risen Son, Jesus Christ?

This is what is meant by the doctrine of “Total Depravity”. A proper understanding of our fallen nature is essential to a proper understanding of the gospel.
